Gonzalez is batting 247, with 55 RBI. Ortiz is batting around 230, but has been hitting better since the first two months, and has about the same number of RBI. I'm not sure what the attraction for Gonzalez, other than the 25 HR, which obviously must often come without men on base, to have so few RBIs with so many HR. I say dump Drew, move Youk to 3rd, put Laroche on First, and also look for a catcher that can throw and hit. Pitching wise, maybe they should try Bowden. He looked good the few times he made spot starts. Poised, with good command. I think time is running out on Smoltz.
Posted Saturday May 16, 2009, About: Torre: Manny's Dodgers apology 'uncomfortable'
As a die hard Red Sox fan, I remember very well a point around mid season last year, where Manny wan not hitting well, especially in the clutch. Then, almost overnight, Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo commented on how quick his bat was. It was almost overnight that Manny started hitting the cover off the ball. I know if you look back, some people will say that Manny has always hit consistently well, but this is simply not true. He would go through long periods where he would not get clutch hits, and then he would get hot for a while and carry the team. Well, he was cold for quite some time, then, as I say, almost overnight, he had a quicker bat, and starting hitting incredibly well. Right around this time, he must have realized that the steroids he was taking were making him hit like Superman, so this is when he starting having fights with Youlillis, and knocking down an older Redsox employee (roid rage?). It was also when he decided he was worth more than the Redsox were going to pay him, so he starting with his sore knees, missing days, watching three strikes go by, etc., so the Redsox would have not choice but to get rid of him, as he had become a cancer in the clubhouse. So, now, less than a year later, it was no surprise to me that he was caught with steroids in his system. I'm convinced he began the use of steroids as a Red Sox, but was able to mask the drugs until now. Redsox Nathan

I agree with Bcoltrinari. I wish Francona had the balls to discipline Manny, but maybe it goes back to earlier managers setting the tone.

Discipline, whether it's with your children, employees, or superstars, ultimately, is appreciated by those being disciplined. What teacher do you appreciate that was easy on you?
