Agreed. Heatley is at prime age and is reasonably priced, assuming he'll be at least 40g-40a player for several years. Replace 2nd round pick with a 1st rounder and I say the deal is fair (even though this year's draft abounds in very good prospects)

I may be wrong, have seen very few of these guys' games but I think injuries to Zubov, Lehtinen and now Morrow along with Miettinen and Barnes leaving the team devastated this team's defense. Now the only guys who are reliable in their own end are: Robidas and Sydor (though he doesn't log tons of ice time). Isn't it the case?

cmh_phx, I wouldn't go that far in my judgement, he took a big step forward last year. Nevertheless 2.5-3.5 mln a year for 3 years wouldn't ruin a 23-year old guy who is only poised to become a regular contributor.

No way Pens could afford him until salary cap skyrockets again next year. Assuming Gabby gets a contract somewhere close to $8.5 million / year, the top 5 of Crosby, Malkin, Gabby, Fleury and Gonchar would eat $36million, which leaves virtually no room for other guys...

The problem is some teams were actually holding their breathe waiting for his decision. But it is their problem, not his. Organizations should have never relied on a guy who whenever asked this question always stated clearly that he was still undecided.
If he feels he's ready for another year, he should be prepared to cash in less than he would if signed in the offseason. A potential employer has to be aware that Sundin's production might drop due to his inability to make up his mind. Plain and simple.
