And........the longball continues to haunt Shelby.

Unrelated to that......Billy Hamilton can't hit....period. How can he be on base all day against Shelby Miller??

Yep, Craig getting the day off. Jay is 6-18 lifetime against Leake, so he is in RF:

Carpenter 3B
Wong 2B
Holliday LF
Adams 1B
Moline C
Peralta SS
Jay RF
Bourjos CF
Miller P

Okay, random thoughts on the Reds series:

- I like what I see so far out of Wong and Peralta on offense.

- Bourjos looked clueless at the plate in those first two games.

- I bash him a lot, so I'll give credit to Jay for getting a big hit to bring home a runner from 3rd yesterday.

- Neshek is failing to generate confidence so far.

I see your point, Toad, but I'm glad Mozeliak held onto all of the young arms. Garcia's injury only magnifies the need for pitching. CarMart definitely outpitched Kelly this spring, and I wouldn't be surprised if he is in the rotation by June.

I think the signing of Diaz from Cuba solidifies the shortstop position in the minors for now. With Taveras, Piscotty and Grichuk at Memphis in the outfield, hopefully we'll have some bats ready to come up this year if needed.

Hey Redbird. I don't think anyone knows for sure why Miller was ignored in the postseason. My guess is tired arm, and Matheny simply had more confidence in the other guys at that time.

I think Shelby has a big second year, and everyone forgets about the 2013 postseason.

He can't be any worse than Jay, and he brings superior defense.

Agreed 25. One of the last reported requests I read from Colorado was Tulo for Miller, Rosenthal, Adams and either Siegrest or Martinez. That would be insanity.

So the question is: would you rather have Tulo or Peralta plus those four names?

The thing I didn't mention but should have: the key to this deal might end up being the minor league outfielder Randal Grichuk. If he turns into a starter in the Cardinal outfield at some point, they may look back on this deal as a complete steal. Much more upside with him than with Freese or Salas.

I don't think I'd be real enthused about Hart, Toad. I don't see that he adds a lot for what he would likely cost.

I'm with you on Drew though. For what he would cost, I don't think he'd be worth it, as he'd certainly be a bit of an upgrade offensively, but not a difference maker. The Rangers trading Kinsler probably puts an end to any deal we can do with Texas for a SS, as I'm assuming Profar will now move to 2B to replace Kinsler.

I hope Mozeliak has something up his sleeve as far as getting a SS.

No doubt that we have pitched well enough to win this Series, but you can't win scoring 1 or 2 runs every night. Holliday has been the only one hitting with authority, and the idea of a clutch two out hit seems to be fantasy at this point up and down the lineup.

Tough spot for Wacha again. Just go into a hostile environment and throw a shutout......because you're certainly not going to get many runs of support.

If Miller ended the season with a tired arm or they are concerned about his innings, that is fine. Just say that and put someone else on the roster so that you aren't wasting a roster spot. Another bat or relief option would help more than Shelby sitting in the bullpen with no consideration of ever being used.

Agree with you on the lineup. 6 thru 9 is producing NOTHING. Personally I would bat Shane 6th tonight after Yadi. The guy has been ripping line drives almost every time he gets up there. I've got to assume he plays tonight and if he is productive, I hope Matheny starts him in Game 6 and sits Jay. He's got to do something to get the offense going, and Robinson shows more signs of life than either Jay or Freese.

I hope you're right. The defense has been good after the first game.

Timely hitting is really hurting them. Game 3 shouldn't have even been close. Bases loaded no outs in the fourth and they don't score. Holliday on third with no outs in the 7th and they don't score. Game 4, Yadi at 3rd with one out in the 8th, and Jay can't get the ball out of the infield to score a run. If they are going to win this Series, they HAVE to get those kind of runs home.

Idiotic rookie mistake by Wong to end the game with Carlos in the batter's box and Holliday on deck.

They need Wainwright to step with a huge game tonight and go back to Boston only needing one.

That's 3 in a row that were edge of the seat stuff. It's easy to second guess, but I didn't have a good feeling about bringing Maness in last night. He just hasn't got the outs in this post-season as he did during the regular season.

When this is all over, I hope there is an explanation as to why Shelby Miller has been shelved. Maybe there has been one and I haven't heard it, but he's got such good stuff that I can't believe he has not been an option in the WS or the NLCS.

You're right game 1 was ugly with the errors and the misplay between Adam and Yadier. Add to that the leadoff walks by Adam, and it made for a bad night. Credit Lester for throwing a great game though, and keeping our guys off balance.

Last night was more what we are used to seeing. Dominant pitching from the young arms. Wacha wasn't quite as sharp as he had been, but he didn't get rattled and kept us in it. Can't walk Pedroia ahead of Big Papi there, and then get behind Papi in the count.....but that was all Wacha gave them.

The lights out work by Martinez and Rosenthal was beautiful to see. Great move by Matheny sticking with Carlos to pitch to Ortiz. Also I thought Matheny managed a great game all night, being aggressive with the double steal was a key to the game.

I feel good about this one too, for some reason. I think if we keep pitching like we have, we're going to be tough to beat. I just feel like our offense can get to their rotation a bit. Hope we are both right. :o)

I guess Carpenter could count as an experienced outfielder if you were in a pinch.

Don't think this is confirmed, but I'm reading that Craig is in, and Adron Chambers is out for the World Series roster. If true, it would surprise me a bit that Chambers is being left off instead of Wong. Assuming that Craig can't play the outfield at all, there would only be four experienced outfielders on the WS roster.

Maybe they want the extra infielder on the bench in case of an injury after they remove Freese from games.

Wow. Awesome game....who'd have guessed that we would get to Kershaw to that degree?

What can you say about Micheal Wacha? He's been everything they have needed and then some. His numbers in his last four starts are mind-boggling.

I think the Birds benefited from Mattingly's decision to play Hanley last night. He was clearly hurt and didn't really go hard after any of those balls hit his direction. I like Donnie Baseball, but he did several things in this series that I thought were mistakes. Taking A-Gon out of Game 1 in the 6th really helped the Cards in that extra inning game.
Posted Friday October 18, 2013, About: NLCS
Yeah, I'd like to keep it close, maybe chip in a couple of runs on Kershaw, and then beat their bullpen late.

I have all the confidence in the world in Adam, but I don't want a Game 7. Adam would look great starting the first game of the World Series.
