The NL has more bad teams? That couldn't be partially due to the fact that their league is larger, could it?
Smoltz had two dreadful starts against OAK and BALT, as well as his first start against that Nationals which was bad.
The Red Sox haven't really had the best of luck with pitchers this year (outside Beckett/Lester), so maybe their pitching scouts/coaches aren't so good...DiceK, Penny, Smoltz, Masteron, Bucholz...all guys who underperformed what was expected
does the NL have weaker hitting in general? sure. Is NL pitching better in general? yes. The analysts/coaches all said that they believed his stuff was there, so maybe tipping his pitches was the problem....
