Clemens got a pro-rated $25 million per year deal.
Santana is better than either of these guys. Santana will sign for $20 million per year, unless he takes a serious "home-team" discount to play for Boston. And even then, I imagine they give him at least Zito's 18 million a year.
And I don't care what anyone says, that price is not too steep. Prospects are prospects. At best, they can only hope to be as good as Santana some day. You take the sure thing over prospects.
The Sox traded two "untouchable" prospects for Pedro once upon a time, and neither prospect turned out to be any good, if any one remembers.
The Twins ask for Ellsbury, Lester and Buchholz at once, and they keep Santana in the off-season, and then trade him at the deadline next year, taking Crisp, Lester and Buchholz.
Either you save the coin and get a guy like Crede, but Lowell was a World Series MVP, and I think the Sox need to keep this nucleus as opposed to post-2004.
And Crisp may be the linchpin to getting Santana, since the Twins need a replacement pitcher, and a new CF.
