I don't think he needs the money, he'll retire if he senses he can't play anymore. If he's got something left in the tank he'll be a bargain at $500k. Anybody who watched Marleau play against the Wings last year in the playoffs knows he sorely needs some guidance.
Speaking of the Wings, an interesting parallel there is the signing of Dalas Drake for about the same amount of money. Many people have written him off, yet the Wings have a young grinder by the name of Tomas Kopecky who could benefit tremendously from Drake's experience.
Like JR and Drake or not, I believe these are good deals for their respective clubs.
