It is always surprising to run into an 1860 fan, but there are more of them out there than you would think. I have only really been following them for the past couple years. I was always familiar with them from playing the FIFA games on Sega. I had been an AC Milan fan from watching their 4-0 thrashing of Barca to win the European Cup, but I soured on them as i began to realize they are the 'Yankees' of Italy. About that same time I started to follow German soccer. My father was actually born in Bavaria, so I always had a preference for teams from that region. Bayern was the same as AC Milan in my eyes, so I started following 1860 and have grown attached. I also follow VfL Wolfsburg b/c its nice to have rooting interest in the top flight and I like Volkswagen's. Gerd Mueller was incredible, but i have always been more of Beckenbauer fan as I play defense. When I lived overseas(Indonesia), one of my dad's co-workers, a Munich native, was always trying to convince me to cheer for Bayern. He would always come out to my high school games b/c he missed going to the Olympiastadion and offered to take me to a match if was ever in Munich, so I have a bit of soft spot for Bayern. You wouldn't know where to get an 1860 jersey(current or past) by chance?
