So the Cubs now have to win in 4 to fulfill my prediction that they'd sweep if they won Game 1. It was a great pitchers duel, and Lou pulled Z out after 6 to save him for his next start on 3 days rest. The issues in the game included this move, as well as whether Z should have bunted Theriot over after the 2-base error. Then Soriano's fly ball would have scored a run. Then with a 2-1 lead, maybe Z goes 7, and the pen closes it down, etc..Then there was the bases loaded 2-out sit. after the game was tied - do you PH Ward or Fontenot for Z when he was only going to go 1 more inning…

So the Cubs ended up winning their division by 2 games, and they did not quite reach my target of 86 wins, which would be a 20-game improvement over 2006, finishing with 85. Good enough, though. They had the worst record in the NL last year, and it became a death march. To improve that much in a year requires not only more talent, but a daily attitude of winning baseball, and the change in manager to Lou Pineilla accomplished that. The next goal for the Cubs is to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, a team that won 90 games, but was outscored by their opposition by 20 runs, so they exceeded their…

The Cubs are now on the brink of the playoffs after a combination of a Brewers error-fest last night, losing to San Diego 9-5 and looking terrible; and the Cubs shutting out the Reds in Cincy 6-0, behind El Torro, Carlos Zambrano. Soriano led off the game with a HR, and with the Reds essentially fielding a minor league team with Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey out, it was all they needed. Even Mark Bellhorn, ex-Cub, was called up to play for the Reds. Cubs now have 42 HR's in September after much criticism of their lack of power thru the summer.
