Most American sports fans probably missed it, but David Beckham’s Los Angeles Galaxy lost again on Saturday (1-0 to Columbus), which in all realistic terms ended the Galaxy’s playoff hopes and (combined with Toronto’s win at New York) gave L.A. the worst record in MLS (7-12-8) with three regular-season games remaining. Beckham will almost certainly play just one more MLS game in 2008: the Galaxy’s season finale on Oct. 26 at home against FC Dallas. HAVANA, Cuba -- Five thoughts after the U.S.’s 1-0 win over Cuba in Saturday’s Concacaf semifinal-round World Cup qualifier (many thanks to the Cuban federation for the excellent wifi in the stands, better than any Caribbean or Central American venue I can remember): • The U.S. is doing just enough to win ... and not much more. Soccer is the unfairest but also most appealing team-sport to play : you can be fat or thin, tall or short, fast or slow, but you never enter the pitch already beaten and have always the chance that other teams-sports usually deny i.e. you and your 10 team-mates can always grab your crossbarr all game long but still score a very-last-second goal. Greece 2004, Italy 2006, Turkey 2008 prove this and I, a 34-year-long-carreered amateur sweaper, must confess that I enjoy them all, despite their defensive attitude and not too brilliant show. For all these reasons no surprise at all that the formerly-acclaimed best teams are back home - but for Spain, to see - and nobody can really say who will be champion in the end or who will win in your back-yard or play-ground tomorrow. Wish you had not German opponents !
