Pistol Pete Maravich’s Sophomore Season at LSU – Lighten it up in the Bayou…..   The year was 1967.  Pete Maravich now takes his game to the Varsity level at LSU.  In my previous posts it was evident that during his freshman year he simply DOMINATED the competition.  Would he be able to live up to expectations at the Varsity level in his second season?   The “Pistol” would not disappoint.   His numbers were staggering….. 43.8 points per game, along with 7.5 rebounds and 4 assists per night.  In Pete’s…

Analyzing “Pistol Pete” Maravich’s Freshman DOMINANCE From Another Perspective   As I discussed in previous posts freshman did not play on the Varsity basketball teams in the 1960’s.   Pete Maravich dominated the freshman league for LSU in the 1966-67 season, averaging 43.6 points per game.  Some would argue that all he did was shoot – and I’ll agree that to put up 43 points a game requires you to have the ball in your hands A LOT, and obviously shoot A LOT, but if you dig deeper you will see a guy who did more than just shoot all…

This was Pete Maravich’s first season at LSU.  In those days freshman could not play on the Varsity – so Pete had to settle for dominating, and I mean dominating the freshman games.   The LSU Tiger freshman team that year finished 17-1, and 6-1 in SEC competition.   Pete began the season by dropping 50 on Southeastern in his first game.  He also had 14 rebounds and 11 assists in that first game – not a bad triple-double to start your career….   Pete finished the season averaging 43.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 6.8 assists.  He…
