In 1994, I was living in Jakarta. My Torontonian boss was a great guy except for his hatred of all things Vancouver. We were able to find some hotels that had satellite TV and were willing to let a few hosers watch the playoffs, foregoing larger soccer, ozzy rules and football crowds. When the Canucks made the finals my boss sent me to Borneo "on business". Not surprisingly, you could not find hockey in Borneo. I only had CNN International sports highlights every half hour. I got back from work knowing that game 7 had happened and waited for CNN to tell me who won. They did the old teaser before the break, showing some hockey action followed by people rioting in the streets. I recognized the riot area as Vancoouver's Robson Street so I thought "Yahoo, we won the cup!" Back then cities in North America seemed to riot when their team won. Chicago after Bulls victories, Montreal when the Habs won and I'm sure they rioted in Detroit when the Tigers and Pistons won. So I thought we had won. After the commercial, I watch the highlights and think "what a great game." Finally they show Messier lifting the cup and I realize not only did we not win but my city rioted after a loss. Losers do that. What would we do if we ever made another cup finals? UPDATE: We did it again. Vancouver is the city of losers. I can't live among these mongrels.
