The Hurricanes entered the RBC Center coming off a hard fought overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers last night. The overtime loss was the first point Carolina has earned in three games. Hoping to improve from over time loss, to full-fledged win, the Hurricanes hosted their southeast division rival the Washington Capitals today. The Canes have not fared well against the Capitals this season losing twice to them in the preseason, and dropping two regular season games to them as well. The Pirates hold on to a slim lead of 27-24 and come away with their first C-USA Championship. Patrick Pinkney played a watertight game, but the real story is the solid performance by the Pirate defense. East Carolina headed into this ball game against one of the nations' best passing quarterbacks, David Johnson. Obviously, no one informed the Pirate secondary about this dangerous scoring threat. The Hurricanes continue a four-game home stand with fresh legs, old faces, and another tally in the loss column. Over a four-day break, the always-controversial Jim Rutherford fired head coach Peter Laviolette and then out did himself by rehiring Laviolette's predecessor, Paul Maurice.
