Having just watched one of the best Super Bowls ever, I can only be reminded of my belief that there are certain athletes who are simply winners. James Harrison, who was cut four times in his relatively short career, but who was named the NFL Player of the Year even before his historic, record-setting touchdown run last night, is a winner. Kurt Warner, who bagged groceries before being signed to play arena football and then was cut by the Rams, but who has won one Super Bowl, and been a QB in three of the greatest Super Bowls ever, is a winner. As a sports fan -- baseball, football, basketball, soccer -- for over fifty years, and being a coach for almost half that time, I've always felt that there are certain players who are winners , and they aren't always the "obvious" ones, the ones with stand out physical gifts or gaudy individual statistics. And that a successful team needs these types of players more than a collection of All Stars. So it's official, Rex Ryan is the new HC of the Jets. Does this mean we'll see the Brand New Jets or the Same Old Jets? As a fan of the Jets since they were born as the NY Titans, I dearly hope it's the former. And based on the exerpts of Ryan's first press conference I think I have some reason for hope. I base this mainly on what was reported to be said by Mike Westhoff whom Ryan has agreed to retain (which in itself shows Ryan has some good judgment).
