Jim Horten

Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., I had no local pro teams to cling to, so I was a bandwagon fan beginning in the '70's. I jumped on the Big Red Machine and the Steel Curtain. My first NBA memories are of Rick Barry and his "granny-style" free throws, which was the only way I could make a basket then, so the Golden State Warriors are my hoops team. I saw NHL standings in the paper and figured I needed a hockey team and the only one of my cities that had a team was Pittsburgh and they stunk. But we got Super Mario and the rest is history. I am a graduate of Middle Tennessee and being the good Catholic, I pull for the Irish.

Welcome to Cincinnati Dusty Baker. What I like about this move:  Baker is a proven winner, plain and simple.  He had a tough run late as Cubs manager that had more to do with injuries than ability.  Sammy Sosa, Kerry Wood and Mark Prior fell apart.  He gets a lot of flack for causing Wood and Prior's injuries, but Jeff Brantley, well-respected around the game for his pitching knowledge, pooh-pooh'd Baker causing any injuries with his handling of the young pitchers.   The Reds have not hired a manager of this caliber since Davey Johnson. What I don't…

The BCS is on its ear now with the Kentucky upset of LSU.  You cannot convince me that there is a better team than LSU in the country and that includes Ohio State.  Cal is strong and if it goes undefeated in the brutal Pac-10, they deserve a shot at the title.  There is a huge dropoff from the SEC and Pac-10 to the rest of the FBS conferences. The Bengal Tigers loses in triple over time 43-37 at Kentucky.  LSU really misses Early Doucet.  How many drops by Brandon LaFell the last two weeks?  Jacob Hester is a beast.  I hope the Steelers have him playing on…

From the early games, here are the statements made:(5) USF 64, Central Florida 12 - The Bulls did not allow another intrastate-rival to stick around and make a game of it this week.  USF did what a top-5 team should do.Iowa 10, (18) Illinois 6 - The Illini may be out of the top 25 almost as quickly as it landed there.  Iowa played tough at home.  It is never easy to win on the road in conference play and Illinois found that out today.Michigan 48, Purdue 21 - The Wolverines chewed-up and spit-out the Boilermakers today.  The maize-and-blue are 5-2 now and probably lurching…
