When I was a teenager in the 1950s, my life revolved around baseball. I went to sleep to the roar of the crowds at Ebbets Field, the Brooklyn Dodgers' ballpark, two blocks away. My brother was playing in the minor leagues, and I played shortstop for the Erasmus Hall H.S. team. I have followed the sport for all these years, never forgetting the Bobby Thompson home run in 1951 or forgiving Walter O'Malley for moving the Dodgers to L.A. In Brooklyn competition between the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants was fierce and the teams were consistent from year to year.…
