Whats the deal with the Steelers mascot?

O.K. Im not a Steelers fan at all but have a lot of friends that are. Why would they even consider a mascot? The Steelers represent the NFL as a tough guy image and now they have there little cartoon mascot running around. Steely McBeam are you kidding me! Ive changed my name in my fantasy football league to Steely McBooger. This is just very funny to me and other non Steeler fans. So to you Steelers fans please send the organization letters to get rid of this thing. If you are a Steelers fan and like Steely please let me know why?
